Thoughts About Therapy

Every person is different, so this question can't be generalized. There is no measurement that can be said that will resonate with every individual. Knowing when you need therapy is about knowing your personal needs.

If you imagine asking this question in a different context... How do you know when you need water? You get thirsty and instinctively look for a drink. How do you know when you are tired? Your eyes get heavy, and dry, your focus becomes more difficult, your energy plummets, and you just want to sit or lay down.

Therapy fulfills the need for mental health. So how do you know when you're not mentally well? This is where every person is different, but it could look like:

  • Not feeling like yourself for a long time, with no direct cause.

  • Not being able to recover from a recent negative life event.

  • Inability to look forward, feel motivated, elevate mood, or get "unstuck".

  • Hitting a wall, feeling disconnected, withdrawing, isolating, or feeling misunderstood.

  • Struggling with negative internal dialogue, thoughts, patterns, or behaviours.

  • Feeling overwhelmed, not coping with everyday stress, living in "fight or flight".

  • Feeling as if there are unanswered questions about self and personal experiences.

  • Not having healthy interpersonal relationships or connections.

These are a few examples of how you might identify a need for therapy, and asking questions about therapy is a great start. The more you know, the more you can determine if therapy is the right solution for you.
