That is a GREAT question. There are so many unprotected titles in Ontario, that do not require specific education, competency, or training. So how do you know that your therapist is licensed?

The most widely recognized governing body for Psychotherapists in Ontario is called the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). You can search their public registrar to see if your therapist is licensed, or ask your therapist if they have a registration number with the college. Professionals under this college can hold the title Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying), or Registered Psychotherapist. In order to drop the qualifying status, the therapist needs to meet certain clinical requirements, and pass their exam.

Other professional governing bodies that permit the controlled act of psychotherapy are: College of Nurses of Ontario, College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, College of Psychologists of Ontario, and Ontario College of Social Workers and Social Services Workers. These colleges do not have specific requirements to perform the act of psychotherapy, though the professional is required to be competent in the services they provide.

Some titles such as "coach","mental health coach" ,"mental health advisor", or "counsellor" are not protected titles. That means that any individual can use these titles, without education, training, or competencies. There are many individuals who practice with education and competency under these titles, though it is important as a client to be informed, and make a decision that meets your expectations and treatment goals. Ask questions, and get to know who you are working with.
