Embracing self-guided therapy: A journey of personal growth through research.

Therapy can be a very overwhelming process to begin; but an important step in feeling better. We want to break down the process for you, to help you feel strength in your steps forward. Below are 5 things to consider when getting started for the first time:

  1. Do you prefer in person or virtual therapy services?

In-person therapy services provides a unique and personal experience that allows you to experience connection with your therapist that feels a bit more "real" for some people. Also getting out of your comfort zone, stepping into a new setting, and starting a new routine can help some individuals with accountability and motivation. If in-person, you will be able to search therapists in your area, check out their space, and find something convenient for your commute and schedule. If virtual, this broadens the therapists that are available, which can be positive to finding the right fit, but may also seem more overwhelming. Use our tips below to help narrow down that search for a virtual therapist! Virtual is also more convenient for those who have a busy work-life schedule, families with children, those who do not have transportation, etc. Virtual therapy may also be good for individuals who feel more comfortable opening up when they are in the comfort of their own space. Virtual therapy is convenient, but keep in mind, technology can sometimes not work in our favour! It is important for your therapist to have a plan for if technical difficulties arise.

  1. What modalities are you interested in?

Though modality is not a priority, some individuals who have not had success with a previous modality, might want to switch it up! Or there may be a specific recommendation from a physician, or perhaps the client has researched something they believe would be beneficial for their success. Some therapists pull techniques from multiple modalities, some stay strict within one, so ask your therapist what their approach would be to see if it aligns with your treatment goals!

  2. What qualities are important for you in a therapist?

Every therapist approaches treatment in their own unique way. This happens naturally as individuals utilize their personal strengths and attributes as a therapist. Is humour important? Straight forward? Someone who pushes the envelope and challenges you? Someone who is warm and calming? One way to get an impression is to set up consults with therapists you feel would be a good fit to see how the connection develops through conversation. A strong therapeutic relationship is an essential component to progress towards treatment goals.

  3. How do you deal with disconnect if it happens in therapy?

Human nature, it is always possible to have a disconnect with your therapist, even with a really strong rapport and trusting therapeutic relationship. A good therapist will be able to identify this disconnect, find a positive way to discuss it in session, and work through it. This sets a positive example of how to work through similar situations outside of session. The fear of disconnect or rupture should not be a barrier to you meeting your treatment goals. If something discussed in therapy weighs on your mind in session or following session, bring it up! We are all human and your therapist will appreciate your openness.

  1. Are you ready and willing to put in the work?

Therapy is a journey, and a sometimes difficult process that involves discussing sensitive topics, hurtful experiences, and vulnerable thoughts. The therapist will guide you, provide a sense of direction, help with coping strategies, and give a sense of clarity, but the work outside of session is just as important! If you have made it as far as researching therapy, you are on the right track! Stepping outside of your comfort zone and being motivated to feel better are important first steps. Making a commitment to trust the process, be consistent, and build resilience are what creates a successful experience.
